Umidigi S is a solid looking mid-tier smartphone. It comes with a plenty of great features at an inexpensive price tag. Umidigi knows how to craft a decent looking device with awesome features to attract almost every smartphone user. Let's take a look inside the box of Umidigi S.

Inside the Box

Umidigi S is a mid-tier device, however, it comes in an exceptional looking package. Honestly, the unboxing of this device is one of the best among all the unboxing I ever did. Holding the box you will be able to feel the nice texture on the tip of your fingers. Removing the upper cover by sliding it to the left reveals the actual box with Umidigi branding. Turning it around, you will find some key specifications about Umidigi S. Opening up the box like a box reveals two compartments. The first compartment contains

While the second compartment houses two small boxes. One of them contains the red black USB cable and other contains the Quick charger for the device. The package is made out of high quality material. Going for the numbers, the dimensions of the box are 6.42 x 3.52 x 2.97 inches and the weight including the device is 510 grams. Wrapping it up I can surely say the unboxing experience was phenomenal.

Design and Build

Umidigi S is a smartphone with solid build quality. Umidigi is using metal for the construction on metal unibody design. This makes the device extremely durable and eliminating the chances of fingerprint smudges on the back. Well if look at the back of Umidigi S, you will find some similarities with Mi 6x like the antenna bands etc. Although, the camera setup is completely different. Umidigi S has a vertical camera set up while the Mi 6x has a horizontal camera placement. There are two color options available-Champagne Gold and Midnight Black.

Though the phone is made out of metal, it does not feel bulky in hands. Moreover, it fits comfortably in hands without straining your arm. Umidigi S has a thickness of 8 mm which is not thick and the weight is 167 grams. These numbers make the Umidigi S a perfect companion for your hands.
Holding the device up you will find a standard display on the front along with a fingerprint scanner, an earpiece, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and the front camera. The hybrid SIM tray can be found on the left. While the volume keys and power/lock keys can be formed on the right of the Umidigi S. The standard USB charging port is on the top along with a 3.5mm jack for earphones and stuff. The bottom of the device houses a speaker and mic.
Turning around the device, you will find the beautiful dual cameras arranged vertically. Also, there is an Umidigi branding along with some other info on the back. Overall, the build quality is superb for the price tag.

Display

Similar to the Mi 6x or A1 (since both are same devices except the OS), Umidigi houses a standard 16:9 display. While the display is great, it does not offer the extra space and immersive experience that modern 18:9 panel offers. But if you do not care about the aspect ratio, the display on Umidigi S is more than pleasing enough to catch your attention.
Talking about the size, Umidigi S houses a standard 5.5 inch 16:9 panel with Full HD resolution. Umidigi is using a SHARP IPS LCD panel with enhances the overall viewing experience of the user and provides amazing viewing angles. Apart from that, the colors on the screen are amazingly saturated making the display more visually pleasing. The Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution provides 401 Pixels per inch, hence, you will not find any pixelation while holding the phone close to your eyes. Sunlight visibility is great and you will able to use the phone under direct sunlight easily.
Umidigi is using a 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 4 for display protection. It manages to protect the display from dust and scratch but it is prone to falls. Also, there is a high-quality transparent screen protector in the box. For better protection just apply the screen protector on the display.
Generally speaking, the display is totally amazing and it is good enough for almost every user except for those who want the modern full view display.

Performance and Memory

Umidigi S is powered by MediaTek Helio P20 SoC. Although it was launched in 2016, the chip is still capable of providing some decent performance. Helio P20 is a 64-Bit Octa-Core chipset which is clocked at 2.3 GHz. For graphics, Umidigi S is using the ARM Mali-T880 MP2 GPU which is clocked at 900 MHz.
Talking about the performance in actual life, Umidigi S can handle much everything. Basic apps and general tasks have no issues at all and the performance is totally smooth. Even heavy apps and games like Asphalt 8 runs well on the device with medium graphics settings. It may not be the most powerful chipset to play games with Ultra HD graphics settings. But it is surely capable to run games well in medium graphics settings.
Umidigi S handles multitasking well with 4 GB RAM. Apps do not run out of memory and you can easily multitask between heavy apps. For storing heavy apps, the device comes with 64 GB memory which is also expandable. Umidigi S supports a MicroSD card up to 256 GB which makes it a perfect storage device.

Software

Umidigi S runs on the two generation old Android 7.0 Nougat. However, the OS is not stock but a themed skin known as Umi OS. Well, UMI OS is similar to many other Chinese skins like the MiUi. There is no app drawer so all the apps are arranged on the home screen. The overall UI is heavily themed but that does not slow down the device in any way. Moreover, it provides extra features for customization and other stuff.
Umi OS comes with many custom features like the app security etc. Apart from that, all the stock Android features like multi windows, doze are also present. Overall the OS feels smooth and switching between apps is quick. Also, the OS is officially upgradable to Android Oreo so you will get all the latest features. This will enhance the life of the smartphone as the apps on the play store support Oreo.

Camera

Umidigi S comes with a good camera for the price tag. The hardware looks capable on papers so read further for real life usage. On the rear, the device houses a 13 Megapixel sensor and a 5 Megapixel supporting sensor. Both the sensors are arranged vertically along with an LED flash. Camera app comes with plenty of features like HDR, Panorama, Bokeh etc. The focus speed is also fast and locks on the subject easily.
Talking about the real life quality, the camera manages to capture amazing looking images during the day. The colors are nicely saturated and the images contain a high amount of details. Using HDR also enhances the overall image quality. Bokeh images turn out to be good enough for the price. During the night, a lot of noise creep in the image but the overall image quality is still good and usable. The primary sensor is also capable of recording videos in 4k resolution at 30fps. Although, there is no optical image stabilization so you have to keep your hands steady while recording videos.
The front of the device houses a 5 Megapixel selfie camera which captures decent images. Yeah, the quality is not good but it gets the job done. However, the quality degrades a lot under low lighting condition. Overall, the quality is great for a mid tier smartphone. You can capture elegant looking images with the primary camera with ease while the front camera is not good but captures respectable images for the price.

Battery Life

Well, Umidigi S is not actually a powerhouse but it is remarkable enough for almost every user. Going for the numbers, it comes with a 4000 mAh battery which is not removable. This is because the unibody design does not allow the user to remove the back panel. Moving on, the battery is not too big but it beats even the flagships in term of battery capacity.
With the usual test cycle which reincarnates the usage cycle of a normal person, the phone was able to last 1.5 to 2 days without the need of recharging. This means Umidigi S's battery provides a Screen On Time of around 6 hours. For knowledge, the test cycle includes watching videos, playing casual games, listening to songs, frequent phone calls and continuous usage of social media apps.
Umidigi also including fast charging support through the reversible Type C connector. Charger output is 12V/1.25A. It is able to recharge the battery from zero to fifty in just 30 mins. Hence, it takes around 100 min to completely charge the battery from 0 to 100%. Overall, the battery life is completely satisfying for even the power users.

Umidigi S comes with plenty of features. Starting with the cellular part, the device supports Dual SIM functionality with Dual Standby. Yeah, it supports LTE services which means faster data speed as compared to 3G. Umidigi S supports FDD-LTE, GSM, and WCDMA. Also, it is reliable and detects my finder almost every time.
The speaker on this device sounds good. It may not be the best you can find but it gets the job done. For better quality, the audio jack can be used to connect external speakers for enhancing the audio listening experience.
